AWS Overheating Issue Disrupts Coinbase and Other Websites

The incident led to degraded performance on Coinbase, with some users unable to transact on web and mobile services. AWS said recovery efforts are underway and affected systems are gradually being restored. AWS Overheating Causing Disruptions Amazon Web Services (AWS) said it is working to restore normal temperature levels at one of its Northern Virginia data centers after an outage disrupted several online platforms, including crypto exchange Coinbase and gambling company FanDuel . Update from AWS In a status update that was published on Friday, AWS explained that it started to see “early signs of recovery” and was gradually bringing affected racks back online in the impacted availability zone in its US-EAST-1 region. The outage caused major issues for Coinbase users, with some customers unable to transact on both the web and mobile platforms. Coinbase confirmed that its services were experiencing “degraded performance” as a result of the AWS disruption, although the exchange assured its users that customer funds remained safe throughout the incident. Coinbase also stated that it was preparing to restore trading functionality in phases. According to the company, all markets would initially be placed into “Cancel Only” mode before full trading activity resumes. This would allow users to cancel existing orders while the platform carefully stabilizes its systems following the outage. Overall, the incident sheds some new light on the growing reliance of major digital platforms and crypto exchanges on cloud infrastructure providers like AWS, where disruptions at a single data center can impact millions of users.
